Sweeping in ice curling is far more strategic than most people realize. While many think it’s just about pushing a rock farther down the ice, there’s actually a fascinating science behind how sweeping affects the curl of the stone. After years of practicing and teaching curling techniques, I’ve developed some strong opinions about directional sweeping that I’m excited to share with you.
The physics behind sweeping is actually quite simple when you break it down. Your broom head creates micro scratches in the ice, and these tiny grooves influence how the rock travels. How Directional Sweeping Works
When you sweep with the curl (your push stroke moves in the same direction the rock is curling), you create scratches that encourage more curl. Conversely, when you sweep against the curl (push stroke opposite to the curl direction), you create scratches that reduce the amount of curl.
The effectiveness of your sweeping depends on several factors:
- Broom head material (competition broom heads vs. hair brooms)
- Pressure applied (more pressure = deeper scratches)
- Angle of your sweeping motion
- Ice conditions (particularly important in frosty conditions)
The angle of your sweeping is particularly crucial. If you sweep at too aggressive an angle (perpendicular to the rock’s path), the scratches act more like speed bumps, and the rock won’t follow them. If your angle is too shallow, you won’t influence the rock enough.
Finding the Perfect Angle
Through trial and error, I’ve found that about 20 degrees off the rock’s path works best for directional sweeping. This angle provides enough influence without creating too much resistance for the rock.
If your goal is simply distance without affecting direction – for example, during an open draw to the house – try sweeping parallel to the rock’s path with no angle at all. This creates what I call the “gutter ball effect” and removes frost from the ice, helping your rock travel as far as possible.
For maximum effectiveness when sweeping parallel, position your body behind the stone. This allows you to apply more pressure with your broom head in front of the rock. Just be careful not to touch the rock with your broom or feet, as “burning” the rock (touching it) is against the rules.
Putting Theory into Practice
The best way to understand directional sweeping is to practice it yourself. Grab different broom heads and test what you can do with them, especially in frosty ice conditions. You’ll be amazed at how much control you can develop over the rock’s path.
I recommend practicing with a partner who can throw consistent rocks while you experiment with different sweeping techniques. Pay attention to how the rock responds to changes in:
- Sweeping direction (with or against the curl)
- Sweeping angle
- Pressure applied
- Sweeping position relative to the rock
After each throw, discuss what happened and make adjustments for the next attempt. This systematic approach will help you develop a feel for how your sweeping affects the rock.
