Balance isn’t just about staying upright; it’s about creating the foundation for consistent, powerful shots. Without solid balance, even the most technically sound delivery can fall apart at the moment of release.
Why Balance Matters in Curling
If you want to throw those impressive weight hits that can dramatically change a game, you need three critical elements:
- Good balance throughout your delivery
- Consistent line of delivery
- Clean release technique
Of these three, balance comes first because it enables everything else. Many new curlers make the mistake of putting weight on both their broom and the rock to stabilize themselves. This creates a major problem: when you release the rock with your weight on it, the outcome becomes unpredictable. The rock might veer left or right depending on how your weight shifts during release.
Progressive Balance Drills That Work
At the start of every practice session, I dedicate time to balance drills. These exercises have transformed my game and can do the same for yours. The key is progressive training that gradually builds your confidence and stability.
Start with supported slides: Push out of the hack with a broom in one hand while pretending to hold a rock in the other. Focus on keeping your throwing hand up off the ice during these short slides. This builds your basic sliding form while maintaining some stability.
Graduate to unsupported slides: Once comfortable, try pushing out with no broom and no rock. Keep your arms in their normal positions without touching the ice. This feels scary at first, so start with gentle pushes and gradually increase your slide distance as your confidence grows.
Widen your base: A simple technique adjustment can make a huge difference. Try turning your sliding foot slightly outward to create a wider base of support. This small change significantly improves stability during your delivery.
Don’t be afraid if you fall – it happens to the best of us!
The Competitive Edge
Modern competitive curling demands power shots. The ability to throw with significant weight separates recreational players from serious competitors. Without solid balance, generating this power becomes impossible because you’ll compensate by leaning on the rock or broom.
I’ve seen dramatic improvements in players who commit to balance training. Even incorporating just a few balance drills at the beginning of each practice session can transform your delivery. The confidence that comes from knowing you won’t fall translates directly into more accurate shots and consistent weight control.
Building Your Practice Routine
Effective balance training doesn’t require hours of dedicated practice. Here’s a simple approach that works:
- Start each practice with 5-10 supported slides
- Progress to 5-10 unsupported slides
- Practice regular deliveries with focus on maintaining balance
This progressive approach builds muscle memory that becomes automatic over time. The goal isn’t perfect balance immediately but gradual improvement that compounds with consistent practice.
As I prepare for the upcoming national championship, balance remains at the core of my training regimen. The ability to deliver powerful, accurate shots under pressure comes from this fundamental skill that too many curlers overlook.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to elevate your competitive game, I encourage you to make balance a priority in your curling practice. The confidence and consistency it brings will transform not just your delivery but your entire approach to the game. Your teammates will notice the difference, and more importantly, so will the scoreboard.
