Your Stance in the Hack – Curling Lesson #6

by Jamie Sinclair
mastering curling stance

Getting your stance right in the hack is one of the most underappreciated aspects of curling. As someone who’s spent years teaching this sport, I can tell you with confidence that your position before you even move can make or break your shot.

When I coach new curlers, I always emphasize that proper alignment in the hack dramatically increases your chances of making your shot. Think of it as aiming a bow and arrow – if your initial aim is off by even a small margin, you’ll miss your target by a mile.

The Perfect Hack Stance: Step by Step

The process begins before you even touch the hack. Your approach matters. Always come from behind the hack, then place your gripper foot (the one with the rubber sole) into the hack with your toe pointing directly at your target.

Next comes foot positioning, which many curlers get wrong. Your sliding foot should align heel-to-toe with your gripper foot, but – and this is crucial – maintain a small gap between them. This space allows your sliding foot to move straight back and forward without hitting the hack during delivery.

When you crouch down, body alignment becomes critical. Keep your:

  • Shoulders square to the target
  • Hips parallel to your shoulders
  • Both knees pointing toward the target

One common mistake I see regularly is body twisting. When curlers twist their upper body in the hack, it becomes nearly impossible to push out in a straight line. Your body naturally wants to follow the direction your shoulders are pointing.

Rock Positioning for Beginners

For those just starting out, I recommend a simple approach to rock positioning. Place the rock directly on the imaginary line between the hack and your target. This straightforward alignment helps develop muscle memory for proper delivery.

As you advance, you might develop preferences for slight variations in rock positioning, but mastering this basic alignment first will give you a solid foundation.

Your stance in the hack is extremely important because that’s where you line up towards a target. If you line up properly, then your odds of making that shot have just increased dramatically.

Common Stance Mistakes to Avoid

After teaching countless curlers, I’ve noticed several recurring issues with hack stance:

  1. Twisted shoulders that aren’t square to the target
  2. Feet positioned too close together, causing balance issues
  3. Knees pointing in different directions
  4. Inconsistent rock placement

Each of these problems creates a chain reaction of compensations throughout your delivery, making consistent shots nearly impossible to achieve.

Building Your Curling Foundation

I believe that mastering your stance in the hack is like building the foundation of a house. Without a solid foundation, everything built on top will be unstable. The same applies to curling – without proper alignment in the hack, your push, slide, and release will suffer.

Take time to practice just your stance. It might seem tedious, but this attention to detail separates recreational curlers from competitive ones. Get a friend to check your alignment or use your phone to record yourself from behind to ensure your body is properly squared.

The beauty of focusing on your stance is that it’s something you can practice anywhere – even at home without ice. Simply going through the motions of approaching the hack, positioning your feet, and aligning your body will build muscle memory that transfers to the ice.

Once you’ve mastered your stance in the hack, you’ll be ready to move on to perfecting your slide. But remember, rushing past the fundamentals only leads to ingrained bad habits that are difficult to correct later. Take your time, get your stance right, and watch your curling game transform.
